Brain cancer kills more children in this country than any other disease and is the leading cause of death of all cancers for people under the age of 40. 1 Australian is diagnosed with brain cancer every 5 hours and 80% of these will die within 5 years. Survival rates haven’t changed in 30 years and there is currently no cure.
I know this all too well, as earlier this year my 9 year old son died from brain cancer. George was first diagnosed at the age of 11 months and underwent numerous treatment protocols such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell therapy plus more that are all brutal on the body and have harsh side effects. Earlier this year we heard the words that all patients with brain cancer hope they never have to hear ‘there is nothing more we can do’. We lived in hope that a cure would come along while George was still with us, though that was not to be. However we will continue to fight so that one day families will not have to hear those devastating words. This can only be achieved through research and clinical trials.

One foundation that is doing amazing work in this space is Carrie’s Beanies for Brain Cancer (CB4BC). CB4BC in partnership with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) along with support from the Victorian government have established The Brain Cancer Center that brings together the best medical minds from Australia and around the world. This has led to over 60 researchers from 16 collaborative partners, leading hospitals, universities and research centers from around Australia all working towards the vision that one day no lives will be lost to brain cancer. This has all been achieved by fundraising initiatives, and since 2015 CB4BC has raised over 22 million dollars towards brain cancer research.

One of the events that we take part in is POINT TO PINNACLE with 'TEAM GEORGE' and 'BODYSYSTEM', raising vital funds and awareness for brain cancer research. This is a fabulous event which provides the opportunity for everyone to come together and support each other getting up the mountain, but more importantly, to highlight some of the personal stories.
This year we do it for George, in the hope that in the future we can find a cure.
